Global Lottery to Fund U.N. Gains Momentum

From Times Wire Reports

Plans for a global lottery to help fill United Nations’ coffers have taken a step forward and could become reality within 18 months, said former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari, a U.N. peace broker who is promoting the idea.

Ahtisaari said the U.N. has agreed to a pilot project with the World Lottery Assn., and if final approval is received, it could be running by late 2003. He gave no details about how it would operate.

The plan was originally proposed by Ghana in 1972 but failed to win sufficient backing.
