Taiwan’s military canceled a submarine-hunting exercise scheduled for next week to avoid creating new misunderstandings with China, a military spokesman said.
“It was a routine drill, but we were afraid that the public and the media would read too much into it,” the spokesman said on condition of anonymity.
Tensions flared after Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian said last weekend that there was “one country on each side” of the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan later tried to soften the statement, saying it was not seeking independence.
Beijing views Taiwan as a renegade province.
