Lloyd Kiva New, Cherokee artist and designer who co-founded and taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M., died Friday in Santa Fe
New, 85, died of congestive heart failure after suffering complications from flu.
Born in Oklahoma, New established a studio in Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1946 and produced Cherokee-based apparel and fabric designs for high-end department stores.
He is considered the first commercially successful Native American artist and the father of Native American contemporary art.
