A fleeing bank robber tossed packets of money from his car as he made his getaway during the Friday afternoon commute on the San Diego Freeway, police said.
“A number of people stopped and grabbed the money. We don’t know how much was taken, but we suspect citizens [kept] some of the money,” Irvine Police Sgt. Jim Smith said.
Some motorists returned the money to police, who caught the suspect in the Irvine bank robbery a few miles away.
Police recovered about $50,000, said Irvine Police Sgt. Jim Smith.
They also arrested Reza Sabouri, 27, of Trabuco Canyon and charged him in the robbery of a Bank of America branch at 14222 Culver Drive.
