Chatsworth Ends Taft Streak

It had been 13 years since Chatsworth High had won a boys’ volleyball City championship. The Chancellors had experienced plenty of frustration while making their postseason runs.
That changed Friday.
Paul George delivered 14 kills and Chatsworth denied Taft a fourth consecutive City title, 15-5, 15-4, 15-1, in a match that lasted only 62 minutes at Cal State Northridge.
Matt Cornell had 12 kills and six blocks, and the Chancellors won a championship for the first time since 1989.
“They’d won three in a row, but we’re the team on the championship trophy now,” said George, who has signed with UCLA.
“There’s no greater feeling.”
Chatsworth never trailed, taking a 7-1 lead in the first game, an 8-1 lead in the second game and completely dominating the final game, giving Coach Greg Saltzberg a title in only his third season.
“It’s more than I expected, but I knew when I started working with these guys that I had something special,” Saltzberg said.
Joel Rodstein had six kills for Taft (10-5), which lost to Chatsworth for the third time.
Marshall def. Fairfax, 15-7, 15-10, 8-15, 16-14--Javier DeLeon had 18 kills and the Barristers won the Invitational championship. Marshall, seeded No. 9, finished 12-3. Fairfax is 8-7.
