Inmate Escapes Briefly in Fullerton

Instead of boarding a bus that would have taken him from a Fullerton courthouse back to the Orange County Jail, an inmate scaled a 14-foot fence Wednesday and fled, only to be recaptured a short time later.
Gregg Bowen, 32, was in court facing charges of grand theft, said Lt. Hayward Miller of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Rather than leaving quietly at the end of the day, however, he fled from the area where inmates are boarded on buses, jumped the fence and took off on foot, prompting a 20-minute chase, Miller said.
In the end, Miller said, Bowen surrendered peacefully, though he suffered minor injuries to his hand while climbing the fence. In addition, Miller said, a sheriff’s deputy was slightly injured during the chase.
“There will certainly be additional charges pending” against Bowen, Miller said, including the charge of escape.
