Police Enforce Truce Between Ethnic Groups

From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Nigerian troops and police set up checkpoints across the oil city of Warri, enforcing a truce between two rival ethnic groups that has halted the most serious violence in the region in months.
The truce between the Ijaw and Itsekiri groups appeared to be holding. But the two sides warned against any efforts to disarm them without a solution to a conflict rooted in disputes over land and political power.
The Red Cross put the death toll from the latest violence at eight, but local groups say up to 50 have been killed.
