An Open Overseer Is Needed for Great Park
- Share via
The Irvine City Council is considering placing the management of the proposed Great Park at the former El Toro Marine base in the hands of an unelected and unaccountable private corporation.
While I support the notion of a nonprofit group managing the museums and other benefits associated with the Great Park, governing this regional public asset should be done in a way that is accountable to all Orange County residents.
I have proposed to Irvine Mayor Larry Agran and his colleagues that this corporation be subject to California laws governing open meetings, full financial disclosure, public records and public bidding on construction of park facilities.
I have further suggested that these facilities be governed by people either directly accountable to voters or to elected officials who must face the voters.
Regional public facilities demand transparency and accountability to the public.
