Budget Shortage Will Mean Shutdown Days

To help close Oakland’s $37.5-million budget gap, libraries, recreation centers and all other city offices will be shut down Friday through Tuesday this Labor Day weekend, and at least one day a month through June.
The city hopes the shutdowns will save $2.2 million during the year. Non-management workers, who rejected a deal to contribute an additional 3% to their pension plans, will be required to take those days off without pay.
“Essential workers,” including police and firefighters, will still work those days.
