In praise of pottery for culture’s sake

Congratulations on an excellent Home issue (Aug. 14). I’m not saying it as a friend of Bill Stern (subject of “Art of the Everyday,” by Jake Klein, and collector of California pottery) but as a grateful reader, hungry for intelligent cultural coverage about the city. For the last 15 years, I’ve done my best to share my enthusiasm about the art and culture in the city with KCRW listeners. It feels so good to see that I have another ally in this endeavor.

Edward Goldman is the host of Art Talk, a program on arts and culture for KCRW-FM (89.9).

I was interested in the article on pottery that was popular in the 1930s. I was also surprised that there was no mention of Franciscan ware. I have some of that and also Bauer ware. In 1938, I was given a beautiful set of Franciscan plates, cups and saucers in half-coral and half-turquoise colors as a wedding present.
