Senators Keep Focus in Shutout of Flames

On the ice, the Ottawa Senators continue to be a model NHL franchise.
Wade Redden scored the game’s only goal in the first period and Patrick Lalime made 21 saves for his third shutout of the season as the financially troubled Ottawa Senators defeated the Calgary Flames, 1-0, Thursday night at Calgary, Canada.
“They’ve been playing well lately and we knew that,” said Lalime, who got his 23rd career shutout. “Our game plan was to get the lead and after that, shut them down offensively.”
That is exactly what the Senators did in getting a 1-0 lead on Redden’s goal late in the first period. Ottawa then held the Flames to 10 shots in the final 40 minutes.
On the same day they filed for bankruptcy protection, the Senators showed why they are the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference.
“There’s never really been a direct impact on our game,” Redden said. “In our heads, it’s been a bit of an issue but as far as the game itself, we’re staying with what’s been working for us and it hasn’t really been an issue for us.”
Dallas 4, Chicago 3 -- Pierre Turgeon scored with 16.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Stars over the Blackhawks at Dallas.
Sergei Berezin scored twice for Chicago, including the tying goal in the third period, as the Blackhawks rallied from a two-goal deficit.
Philadelphia 4, New York Islanders 0 -- Roman Cechmanek made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season, and Eric Desjardins had a goal and assist in the Flyers’ victory at Uniondale, N.Y.
Philadelphia has won five in a row and ended New York’s seven-game streak of earning at least one point (6-0-0-1).
Atlanta 3, Tampa Bay 2 -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored his second goal with 15.2 seconds left in overtime as the Thrashers defeated the Lightning at Tampa, Fla.
Kovalchuk scored from the right circle soon after Atlanta goalie Byron Dafoe stopped Vincent Lecavalier on a breakaway.
Montreal 3, New York Rangers 2 -- Marcel Hossa scored his second goal in as many games since being recalled from the minors to lift the Canadiens over the Rangers at Montreal.
Hossa scored with 13:37 left in the third period as Montreal ended a season-high seven-game winless streak.
Toronto 4, Pittsburgh 2 -- The Maple Leafs held the Penguins to a one-for-nine performance on their league-leading power play without the injured Mario Lemieux, and Nik Antropov scored the decisive goal at Toronto.
Lemieux, the NHL’s leading scorer, missed his second game of the Penguins’ 42 games this season and his first because of an injury, a sore groin that also might keep him out of Saturday’s game against the Rangers.
St. Louis 4, San Jose 1 -- Keith Tkachuk scored two goals, and Brent Johnson made 21 saves as the Blues won at San Jose.
