Taxpayers making less than $30,000, residents of six states and active military personnel are among groups eligible to file income tax returns for free over the Internet.
The program, a partnership of the Internal Revenue Service and tax preparation software companies, is aimed at helping the agency meet its goal of moving 80% of tax filers online by 2007.
The six states are Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Illinois and New York.
Eligible taxpayers can click on a link on the IRS Web site, www.irs.gov, and be taken to a site on which they can choose from among 17 providers to ready and send their tax forms electronically.
