Organizers called off an HIV/AIDS benefit concert that Nelson Mandela was due to host on Robben Island in South Africa next month, saying on Friday they had not been able to reach a satisfactory agreement with its proposed producers.
The former South African president, who spent 18 years in prison on Robben Island under apartheid, had been due to host the concert on Feb. 2. Artists such as U2’s Bono, Macy Gray and Shaggy had been expected to take part in the concert within the walls of the island jail, which is now a World Heritage Site.
