Nine suspects arrested with a cache of explosives and weapons were planning attacks on churches and malls across the world’s most populous Muslim nation, said police in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital.
One detainee, identified only as Ihwanudin, allegedly committed suicide in police custody. He was detained Friday in a house 200 yards from a residence of President Megawati Sukarnoputri. Officers found a rifle and nearly 2,000 bullets, raising fears that he was targeting her.
The suspects are believed to be members of Jemaah Islamiah, a regional terrorist group linked to the Al Qaeda network.
