Re “Bombings Aren’t the Whole Story,” Commentary, July 8: Rajan Menon correctly points out the often-ignored reality of the flip side of the Chechen story. Human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have generated ample documentation on “disappearances” of Chechen civilians and of mass graves. Specifically, HRW has documented the discovery of 49 mass graves containing bodies of over 3,000 civilians.
In a just and fair world, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his administration would be tried for the blatant massacre of a civilian population.
