A young slave woman who died more than 200 years ago and was accidentally disinterred was reburied as dancers and drummers performed traditional African funeral rites.
Many who attended the ceremony at Little Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Chuckatuck said the woman was a reminder of the thousands of other slaves who died without recognition in the United States.
“She was part of our family,” said the Rev. Steve Blunt of First Baptist Church in Suffolk. Several local churches joined in planning the burial.
Archeologists estimate the woman died about 1800 at the age of about 20.
