Crew, Track in Dispute Over Pay
Seeking a pay increase, members of the starting gate crew at Hollywood Park are continuing talks with officials from the track hoping to resolve the situation.
There were reports Friday that some of the assistant starters weren’t going to show for work at night, putting the eight-race program in danger.
However, under California Horse Racing Board rules, a strike would have been illegal since a group must give a 15-day notice of its intent to strike. The CHRB reportedly received the notice on Wednesday, so no action could be taken until July 11 if the two sides fail to reach an agreement.
The assistant starters are members of Teamsters Local 495.
