Fox, Marvel Settle Lawsuit Over ‘Mutant X’

News Corp.’s 20th Century Fox and Marvel Enterprises Inc. have settled a lawsuit over Marvel’s “Mutant X” television show.
Terms of the settlement are confidential, said Ted Russell, a vice president at Fox, which sued Marvel nearly two years ago to stop production of the Tribune Co.’s syndicated television show. Fox claimed the program was a copycat of its popular “X-Men” movie, which was released in 2000 and made more than $163 million.
Marvel, a comic book publisher and toy maker, along with defendants Tribune Entertainment Co. and Fireworks Entertainment, countered that the “Mutant X” TV show was different from the movie. A judge allowed the show to go on the air in the fall of 2001.
The terms of the settlement “are designed to put the lawsuit behind and expand the relationship between Fox and Marvel,” the companies said in a joint statement.
Fox and Marvel have teamed up on another successful movie project, “Daredevil.” Released by Fox last month, the film has grossed $84.7 million, according to the studio.
A Fox spokeswoman said Tuesday that the suit continues against Tribune and Toronto-based Fireworks Entertainment.
Tribune, based in Chicago, also publishes The Times.
