An 11-year-old boy who found keys to his father’s gun box accidentally shot himself Wednesday, Garden Grove police said.
The boy was treated at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center for a “through-and-through” wound in his right thigh. He was expected to be released late Wednesday, Lt. Scott Hamilton said.
The shooting occurred about 3 p.m., when the boy, whose name was withheld, removed a revolver from the gun case and loaded it. Hamilton said the weapon apparently discharged accidentally.
He told authorities he’d found the keys Wednesday, but officers later learned he’d found them as long as a week ago, and had talked with friends about forming a gun club and taking the weapons to school to show them off, Hamilton said.
An investigation is continuing into how he was able to get the keys.
