Hunting Lesson

As a hunter and conservationist, I am incensed by the actions of Britton Cole Lewis (“Hunter Could Have Faced a Stiffer Charge,” May 1). Of the dozens of men and women with whom I have hunted over the years, I can’t think of one who would purposely shoot any raptor, much less one as beautiful and rare as a California condor. Lewis’ reprehensible act is a black eye to all legitimate and ethical hunters. The authorities should throw the book at this guy, and I have a suggestion as to how he could complete his community service requirements when he gets out of jail: Lewis could speak to hunter safety classes, telling prospective hunters, in a contrite manner, to “do as I say, and not as I do.”
