Jeter Gets Closer to Rehab Stint

Derek Jeter took batting practice on the field for the first time since dislocating his left shoulder opening day and expects to begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment Wednesday.

The New York Yankee shortstop, hurt in a collision on the basepath March 31, took three rounds of 20 swings Monday at the club’s player development complex at Tampa, Fla.

“Everyday is a big step,” Jeter said. “Today’s probably the biggest one.”

Jeter could begin his rehab stint at double-A Trenton or Class-A Tampa.

Closer Antonio Alfonseca was activated from the disabled list by the Chicago Cubs, who designated pitcher Alan Benes for assignment.

Alfonseca began the season on the disabled list because of a strained right hamstring. He made three appearances for triple-A Iowa in a minor league rehab assignment.

Benes had a save and a 2.16 earned-run average in three games with the Cubs.
