Spaniards are friendly and eager to help

As a Spanish national, I was shocked to read John Chiu’s opinion of my people (theseMi Casa Es Su Casa? Not for Them,” Letters, April 27). I’ve met people from many countries, and I’ve always heard compliments about Spaniards -- how open, warmhearted, generous, expressive, full of life we are.
I am sorry to hear that Chiu had such a bad time in Spain. The Spanish people are sensitive and intuitive. Perhaps what Chiu experienced was a natural response to his attitude.

My wife and I have just returned from our second trip to Spain in the last six months. We have visited every corner of Spain from Barcelona to Tarifa to San Sebastian.
We were delighted with every aspect of the country. We experienced absolutely no problem with the people. To the contrary, we found them friendly and eager to assist us. We highly recommend a visit to Spain and have faith that anyone who makes any effort to be friendly will find such a visit rewarding.

In visits to Spain I found the people friendly and helpful wherever I went, including the Alhambra in Granada. I have traveled in various countries and also have seen much of our country. In every place I visited I found friendly and unfriendly people. To categorize the people of one country in the sweeping manner in which Chiu did reflects more on him than on the people of the country he visited.
He suggests that the Moors may have left Spain because of the unfriendliness of its people. It certainly took them a long time -- nearly 800 years -- to leave it.
