Shares of North Hollywood-based Film Roman Inc., the animation company that produces “The Simpsons” and other cartoon hits, rocketed more than 300% on Thursday after the company said IDT Corp. will take a controlling stake in the business.
Film Roman shares soared 25 cents to 33 cents in OTC Bulletin Board trading.
Although Film Roman produces “The Simpsons,” it doesn’t own the show. The company has lost money almost consistently since going public in 1996, though it managed a profit of $338,450, or 4 cents a share, in the first quarter.
IDT, a Newark, N.J.-based telecommunications firm, agreed to give Film Roman $900,000 in cash and extend it a credit line of about $2.1 million. In return, Film Roman will give IDT 10 million shares, or a 51% stake. The credit line may be converted into more stock.
IDT’s purchase adds to its animation production capabilities, it said. IDT’s animation unit, Digital Production Solutions, is trying to expand the number of programs it animates.
IDT shares rose 70 cents to $15.60 on the New York Stock Exchange.
