Roger Pilkington, 88; Wrote Series of Books on Boating in Europe

Roger Pilkington, 88, a sailing enthusiast who wrote a series of books about boating trips through Europe, died of natural causes May 5 in London.
He wrote 19 installments in his “Small Boat” series, recounting trips to and through the waterways of Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden and his native Britain.
In “View From the Shore,” published in 1995, Pilkington recalled life between his boating trips, including time he spent studying in Germany, just after Adolf Hitler came to power.
His other books included “Thames Waters” in 1956, “How Boats Are Navigated” in 1962, “One Foot in France” in 1992 and “History and Legends of the European Waterways” in 1998.
