6 Houses of Worship on Historic Trust List

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has placed six urban houses of worship, as a separate category, on its 2003 list of America’s 11 most endangered historic places.
The six are cited as examples of deteriorating religious buildings that are historically important and that remain anchors in their community.
The five churches and one synagogue are Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., founded in 1875 by former slaves; Acts of the Apostles Church in Philadelphia; St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Denver; Quinn Chapel African American Methodist Episcopal Church in Chicago; First United Methodist Church in Seattle; and Beth Hamedrash Hagadol Synagogue on New York City’s Lower East Side.
The architectural landmark designation makes the churches eligible for special assistance from the trust.
