Strong Quake Damages Temples and a Bridge

A strong earthquake rocked central Myanmar early today, damaging temples and a bridge, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, officials said.

The magnitude 6.7 quake struck about 220 miles north of the capital, Yangon, said Tun Lwin, deputy director of the Yangon Kaba Aye Meteorological Center. Three temples and a bridge in Taungdwindyi, about 280 miles north of Yangon, were damaged, another official said. No further details were released.

The U.S. Geological Survey gave the magnitude as 6.5 and said Meiktila, a town of more than 150,000 about 280 miles north of Yangon, was closest to the epicenter.
