Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe’s ruling party confirmed the first woman to become his deputy, putting her on course to succeed Mugabe when he eventually retires.
Water Resources and Infrastructural Development Minister Joyce Mujuru, 49, was named a vice president of the country and the ruling Zimbabwe African National-Union Patriotic Front party.
Mugabe and his other vice president, Joseph Msika, were confirmed in their party posts by the more than 9,000 delegates. Both are in their 80s. In his closing address, Mugabe said it was in line with a 1999 resolution to elevate a woman to the vice presidency of the party.
