An Amtrak train struck an 18-year-old man who was playing with friends on railroad tracks near San Clemente State Beach, Orange County Sheriff’s officials said Thursday.
The unidentified man, a Missouri resident, was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo with moderate to serious injuries.
The accident occurred Wednesday night as the Pacific Surfliner was en route to San Diego. The train was traveling about 40 mph, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.
“It’s unclear exactly what happened, but it appears they were playing on or near the tracks, horsing around,” Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Hayward Miller said.
The train was delayed about an hour.
