‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’

In one of the few technical categories without a nominee from “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” the race for this year’s cinematography award was considered one of the most wide open and difficult to predict.
Russell Boyd won with his first nomination, for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.”
He previously worked with director Peter Weir on such films as “Gallipoli,” “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” and “The Year of Living Dangerously.”
His fellow nominees included Eduardo Serra for “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” John Schwartzman for “Seabiscuit,” John Seale for “Cold Mountain” and Cesar Charlone for “City of God.”
It’s not often that somebody thanks their gaffer and their grip, but after thanking Peter Jackson and his camera crew, Boyd singled out by name his gaffer Pat Murray and key grip Chris Centrella.
