Report Advises Staying With Bay Bridge Design

A report released Thursday recommends that officials stick with a controversial design proposal for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
The price tag on the bridge’s seismic overhaul has risen from $1.3 billion in 1997 to $2.6 billion in 2001 and $5.1 billion last month.
Much of the cost overruns are connected to the design of a 1,600-foot single-tower suspension span.
The audit was prepared for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission by San Francisco-based Bechtel Corp.
The document said redesign of the plan would delay construction and might not offer any savings.
