Chaney Gave a Break, Don’t Give Him One

I do not understand in any way the reasoning behind J.A. Adande’s argument that John Chaney should not be fired, despite having deliberately sent a player out to hurt an opponent. This was an assault, pure and simple.
In the real world, Chaney would have been just as guilty of a criminal assault as the gang leader who has his goons take out some rival, but we are supposed to excuse Chaney because he has been “good to his players”?
I’m sure the player with the broken arm is just warmed all over with that thought.
