Woman Leads Men in Islamic Prayer Service

A woman led an Islamic prayer service with men in the congregation despite criticism from Muslim religious leaders in the Middle East who complained that it violated tradition.
Amina Wadud, a professor of Islamic studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, led the service at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan.
The event was meant to draw attention to the inequality for women in Muslim life, said Asra Q. Nomani, lead organizer of the prayer service.
