Dual city attorneys

Re “Rocky, the punching bag,” editorial, Dec. 4
Your editorial makes some good points about the problems of electing city attorneys. Your calling for making this an appointed office will cause more problems; the current system ensures that there is, in theory, an independent city attorney. A good compromise might be to revise the City Charter or pass an ordinance mandating that the City Council and the mayor each hire an attorney. Under this proposal, the council and the mayor would be accountable because they would be forced to consider asking their respective legal counsels if they agree with the city attorney’s actions.
