U.S. Plans High-Security Prison Near Kabul

The United States wants to develop a high-security prison in Afghanistan to hold terrorism suspects, including some transferred from the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Financial Times reported.

The U.S. has chosen the site of a former Soviet-era prison near the capital, Kabul, to house the prisoners, the British newspaper said. The report said some of the jail’s facilities had already been refurbished.

Only nine of about 500 prisoners being held at Guantanamo have been charged. The United States has been holding prisoners, many from Afghanistan, there since January 2002.
