The magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake -- the state’s costliest natural disaster -- shuddered across metropolitan Los Angeles at 4:31 a.m., leaving 57 dead and 20,000 people homeless. Freeways, bridges and buildings collapsed, causing an estimated $20 billion to $40 billion in damage.
