Boston gets an Italian goddess

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, which in September returned to Italy 13 Greek and Roman antiquities that may have been looted, on Tuesday unveiled a 1st century marble statue that it had received on loan from the Italian government as part of the agreement.
The statue, “Eirene (Goddess of Peace),” will be on view at the museum through the fall of 2009.
“With the loan of this important antiquity, we mark a new era in which the public has access to the world’s greatest treasures while also making a statement against the illicit excavation and trade of antiquities,” said Malcolm Rogers, the museum’s director.
