Retired deputy stabbed

A retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was critically wounded Wednesday when he was stabbed by a graffiti tagger he confronted behind a Huntington Beach pet store, authorities said.
Ronald Chaver, 43, fired five gunshots at the vandal but missed, said Huntington Beach Police Lt. Terry Lindsey. It was unclear, he said, whether the stabbing or shooting occurred first.
Police responded a few minutes later, shortly before 10 a.m., and arrested a suspect outside the Petco at Adams Avenue and Magnolia Street. The 16-year-old, whose name was not released because he is a minor, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
Chaver was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he underwent surgery for stab wounds in his upper torso and was listed in stable condition, Lt. Craig Junginger said.
Los Angeles sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said Chaver retired from the department in the early 1990s.
