Two Americans and one Norwegian on a South African shark-cage diving trip drowned when their boat was capsized by a freak wave, tourism and rescue officials said.
Nearby boats rescued 16 people from the boat, who were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
The two Americans and one Norwegian were pronounced dead at the scene, said Mariette Hopley, who heads the Great White Shark Protection Foundation. She said the remaining passengers and crew had minor injuries and shock.
The accident happened off Gansbaai, about two hours from Cape Town.
