Warnings issued as storm nears

Haitians were told to prepare for evacuations as Tropical Storm Gustav formed quickly in the Caribbean on a path to hit their country’s southern coast as a hurricane.
Haiti issued hurricane warnings along much of its coast, and forecasters said Gustav’s center could pass near or over Haiti today.
The U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, also was preparing for the storm.
