At least 7 hurt in shooting at party

At least seven people were shot and wounded early Saturday after at least one person opened fire at a house party, authorities said.

Eight suspects have been detained in connection with the shooting and were questioned individually, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan McPherson.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. at a birthday party in the 39500 block of Hawthorne Street, McPherson said. More than 100 guests paid entry at the door and then paid for their own alcohol, he said.

McPherson said that suspected gang members, who had paid to enter, began arguing with other partygoers. When one of the hosts asked the men to leave, at least one person opened fire, McPherson said.

Two suspects were detained near the party as deputies responded to the shooting. About an hour later, Los Angeles police pulled over a car driving about 100 mph on the southbound 405 Freeway. Police saw a bullet hole on the car.

One of the passengers had a gunshot wound to his leg, and five others inside were taken into custody for questioning, McPherson said.
