A Maldivian boy scout foiled an assassination attempt on President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, grabbing a knife as the attacker lunged out of a crowd, a government official said.
Gayoom was not hurt, but his shirt was ripped before the unidentified attacker was overpowered by guards, spokesman Mohammed Shareef said.
Mohammed Jaisham Ibrahim, 15, wearing his blue Maldives boy scout uniform with a blue kerchief around his neck, reached out and grabbed the blade, according to the government.
He was flown to Male for medical treatment.
