The wrong tax

Re “Sales tax hike could fund subway to the sea,” Jan. 11
A sales tax that applies to everyone would be unfair. Instead, Los Angeles County should impose a gasoline tax. That way people who drive and pollute the most pay the most. Making gasoline more expensive encourages people to leave their cars behind. And the tax would not affect people who already use mass transit or disproportionately penalize the poor.
A gasoline tax would also discourage the use of gasoline, reducing our dependence on foreign oil. The money should be set aside for mass transit only.
