CALLING ALL HIPPIE CHICKS

Times Staff Writer

Red-HOT New York designer Philip Lim has teamed up with Tatami, Birkenstock’s style-minded cousin, on a line of earthy footwear for men and women, hemp socks optional.

The hippie-chick styles don’t stray too far from Tatami’s everyday utilitarian aesthetic, and are similarly priced -- but details are distinctively Lim. The lively yellow, green and orange that graced his spring runway show add oomph to the otherwise bare-bones Iris sandal ($150). The Triton ($170), a triple-strap sandal, gets a fashionable update with the same glossy patent finish that’s on Lim’s trench coats.

The cheetah-print Jane ($190) borrows its spots directly from Tatami’s own spring line. Meanwhile, the red suede Troy Maya ($130) is a twist on a gladiator that ties at the ankle. And the strappy, fringe-topped Helen flats ($150) are a perfect take on spring’s tribal theme.

Luckily, the cushy sole that gives Tatamis their orthopedic look has been replaced with a younger looking, cork bottom. The collection is available at Barneys, Netaporter.com and Lagarconne.com. But the boys should sit this one out. The styles are unisex, but they shouldn’t be.
