Powdery material mailed to offices

Handwritten letters containing a powdery substance were received Monday at five L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services offices, authorities said Tuesday.
Offices in El Monte, Chatsworth, Covina, Lancaster and Ladera Heights received a letter, said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Los Angeles. No one who came in contact with the powder has shown symptoms of being affected by a harmful substance, she said.
Eimiller said the letters appeared to be similar, and all were sent through the U.S. Postal Service.
The FBI’s joint-terrorism task force is investigating the letters with post office agents and hazardous materials teams from the Los Angeles Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department, Eimiller said. Laboratory tests of the powdery substance should be completed within a few days, she said.
