The divisions in the Mideast

Re “Next year, the Mideast,” Opinion, Nov. 22
The “special relationship” between the United States and Israel that Tim Rutten refers to is largely to blame for perpetuating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Rather than taking Israel to task for decades of immoral policies, we bestow its government with billions and ask absolutely nothing in return. This leaves little reason for Israeli politicians to take the political risk of embracing the major concessions that will be necessary for peace.
Where would South Africa be today had the United States and the world simply looked the other way?

Israel has wanted peace with its neighbors for 60 years. However, until Syria, Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Arab states recognize Israel’s right to exist, there will never be peace. Until that time, Israel will do whatever it has to do in order to protect itself.
