Many bills at risk of being vetoed

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he will veto bills if the Legislature overrides a veto he has threatened on the budget. Bills that could be in jeopardy include:

Bingo: Would outlaw electronic bingo machines that compete with slot machines operated by Native American tribal casinos under exclusive state compacts. (Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, SB 1369)

Chemicals: Would have state scientists analyze and regulate chemicals in consumer products. (Assemblyman Mike Feuer, D-Los Angeles, AB 1879)

Courts: Would borrow $5 billion to renovate and replace cramped and crumbling courthouses. Money would be repaid by an increase in court filing fees and penalties for criminal and traffic offenses. (Sen. Don Perata, D-Oakland, SB 1407)

Driving: Would bar motorists from sending or reading text messages and e-mails while driving. (Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, SB 28)

Food: Would require restaurant chains with 20 or more locations in California to post calorie counts with each food item on their menus.(Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Pacoima, SB 1420)

Health insurance: Would ban retroactive cancellation of policies. (Assemblyman Hector De La Torre, D-South Gate, AB 1945)

Mortgages: Would ban abusive practices by brokers and lenders. (Assemblyman Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, AB 1830)

Pollution: Would put a $60 fee on each 40-foot cargo container going through the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland to pay for programs to reduce pollution. (Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, SB 974)

Privacy: Would prohibit retailers from storing customer credit card information. (Assemblyman Dave Jones, D-Sacramento, AB 1656)

Wildfire: Would restrict construction where fire protection is inadequate. (Jones, AB 2447)
