at Milwaukee 3, Chicago 1: CC Sabathia (11-2) and Ryan Braun -- with help from the New York Mets -- put the Brewers in the playoffs for the first time since 1982. Making his third consecutive start on three days’ rest, Sabathia pitched a four-hitter and Braun hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning. The Brewers won the National League wild-card spot by one game over the Mets.

Florida 4, at New York 2: Pinch-hitter Wes Helms hit a home run against Scott Schoeneweis (2-6) to lead off the eighth inning and Dan Uggla followed with a home run against Luis Ayala to help finish off the Mets, who led the NL East by a 3 1/2 games with 17 to play before going 7-10 the rest of the way. The Mets brought in former greats, including Tom Seaver and Dwight Gooden, for a postgame ceremony to close out Shea Stadium. The team is moving to a new stadium next season.

at Philadelphia 8, Washington 3: Lou Marson and Matt Stairs hit consecutive home runs in the eighth inning for the Phillies.

at Houston 3, Atlanta 1: Brad Ausmus hit a two-run home run to lift the Astros.

at St. Louis 11, Cincinnati 4: Ryan Ludwick hit his 37th home run and Troy Glaus hit his 27th to help the Cardinals end the season with a six-game winning streak.

at Arizona 2, Colorado 1: Randy Johnson (11-10) pitched a two-hitter to earn his 295th win.

Pittsburgh 6, at San Diego 1: Adam LaRoche and Steve Pearce hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning in a matchup of last-place clubs.

at San Francisco 3, Dodgers 1: Giants ace Tim Lincecum (18-5) matched his career high with 13 strikeouts.
