Nobel Prize in literature goes to French author Patrick Modiano

The 2014 Nobel Prize in literature goes to French author Patrick Modiano, the Swedish Academy announced Thursday morning.
Though not well known in the U.S., Modiano is highly regarded in France. He had been considered among the top contenders for the prize.
He has written more than 30 books, primarily slim novels working on the theme of memory. The judges cited Modiano “for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation.”
He is the 14th French writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature (one, Jean Paul-Sartre, declined to accept it). The most recent French recipient was Jean-Paul Le Clezio in 2008.
