Home where Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ for sale

The 220-year-old home where Harriet Beecher Stowe penned “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is for sale in Brunswick, Maine, at $3 million.

The 3,500-square-foot home, with six bedrooms and one bathroom, was at another location when she wrote the influential anti-slavery novel and was moved by the current owners to its spot near Bowdoin College.

Stowe and her husband, Calvin, moved to the Maine town in 1850 so he could be a professor at the college.

Although they lived down the street from the house that is now for sale, Stowe rented a room there so she could get away from the bustle of her six-child household and write on a daily basis.

Home of the Week: An architectural gem in the desert

Set on an acre, the 1794 house features a living room, sitting room, family room, formal dining room, finished attic and one-car garage.

Potential buyers must agree to maintain the historical context of the house, which is registered with the local historical society and is in the process of being registered at state and federal levels.
