Oscar Mayer wieners recalled because they contain cheese

Kraft Foods Group Inc. is recalling 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners because they may contain cheese, federal inspectors said.

The recall, which amounts to nearly 1 million hot dogs, occurred after the Madison, Wis.,-based company labeled Classic Cheese Dogs incorrectly by distributing the product as the traditional cheese-free wiener.

Cheese can act as an allergen because it contains milk, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement Sunday.

The hot dogs were manufactured March 2 and March 3 and bear the factory plant number “Est. 537H” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the package. The products were delivered to Kraft distribution centers and to retail stores nationwide.

“The problem was discovered by a consumer who notified the company on April 18, 2014. The company contacted the USDA the following day regarding the issue,” the FSIS said.

There are no reports of illness linked to the recall.

FSIS said the following products are subject to the recall:

• 16-ounce packages of “Classic Wieners Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added” with “Use by 16 Jun 2014” date and product code “044700000632”
• Cases of 16-ounce packages distributed to retailers of “Classic Cheese Dogs Made with Turkey & Chicken, Pork Added, and Pasteurized Cheese Product” with “USE BY 16 Jun 2014” date and case code “00447000005300”
